In all this techno-crazy world, one
often wondered when the time would come when man could no longer tell the
difference between a computer operated tone and a human conversation. I have
heard Alexa talking and Siri responding in their casual computer operated voices
which is how it is for all those techno assistants. Then, no more than few
months ago, I came across a recording that I thought was just some random
conversation between two people. What I did not know was that one of those
people was a Google Assistant called Duplex.
It took me a great pause and focus
to figure out that the woman making a salon appointment was actually Duplex in
it coolest, most casual tone ever. Impressive as it sounds, it is also a whole
new level of curiosity to figure out what Google just did there. So I
researched on the basics of its functions.
Google Assistant initially formed
an additional service by Google Now. This was designed to personalize the user
information regarding their daily plans, timings and locations to extract the
relevant information for their consumption. This was extended on the prevailing
Google OK services. What remains currently is the Google Assistant which is
user friendly and works in both text and voice command for your convenience.
From timers to calendars and
reminders to meeting schedules, Duplex can do your tasks for you and even take
your place to make calls and carry out perfectly natural conversations- I would
say even more calmly than you can. Just a couple of years since Google launched
its Assistant, it has been very popularly acknowledged and used by more
partners including it into other smart devices than just phones.
The basic operational system
consists of a “recurrent neutral netwrork (RNN)”and “TensorFlow Extended (TFX)”
and the output comprises of Google’s “automatic speech recognition (ASR)”. This
is a very simplified version of the complex structures that make Duplex a
compatible mechanism for its users. The illustration bellow describes the
functioning of Google Assistant:
